China and Pakistan have agreed to expand cooperation in agricultural technology and livestock development in Punjab.
The development came during a meeting between Sun Yan and Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani in Lahore. The discussion focused on technology transfer and smart farming solutions to improve food security.
Kirmani highlighted a Rs 250 billion interest-free loan program under the Kissan Card initiative. The program supports around 800,000 farmers by improving access to seeds and fertilizers. It aims to increase crop productivity, especially for small-scale growers.
The provincial government has also allocated Rs 66 billion for farm mechanization. This includes the distribution of 10,000 super seeders at subsidized rates. The initiative aims to reduce crop burning, which is a major cause of smog in the region.
Both sides discussed challenges related to Pakistan’s frozen meat exports. Kirmani said that eight disease-free livestock zones have been established to meet Chinese import standards and control foot-and-mouth disease.
Iftikhar Ali Sahoo stated that seven agreements signed in October 2025 are being implemented. These include projects in cotton seed research, satellite-based crop monitoring, and agricultural machinery manufacturing.
Sun Yan said Chinese experts will provide technical support to help Pakistan adopt digital agriculture. He added that these efforts will also help reduce climate risks and improve crop yields.
Overall, the cooperation reflects growing ties between the two countries. It also highlights a shared commitment to modernizing agriculture and ensuring long-term food security.
