Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Musadik Malik held talks with Vice Chairman of the People’s Government of the Xizang Autonomous Region Xu Zitao to strengthen cooperation in climate action, environmental protection, and sustainable development.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 5th China Xizang Trans-Himalaya Forum, where both sides explored opportunities for greater collaboration in ecological conservation and scientific research.
Xizang Highlights Green Development Model
Vice Chairman Xu Zitao welcomed the Pakistani delegation and briefed Dr. Musadik Malik on Xizang’s history, geography, economic progress, and cultural heritage.
He highlighted the region’s development approach, which places strong emphasis on ecological conservation and environmental protection.
Moreover, Xu said Xizang has experienced significant socio-economic transformation over recent decades, with improvements in infrastructure, public welfare, and regional development.
Focus on Environmental Protection
During the meeting, the Xizang Vice Chairman highlighted environmental protection as a central pillar of the region’s development strategy.
He noted that Xizang has established 47 national parks and continues to pursue economic growth while preserving its unique ecosystems.
The discussion also covered the region’s cultural diversity and traditional practices, including the historical presence of a small Kashmiri-origin Muslim community.
Pakistan-China Climate Collaboration
Dr. Musadik Malik thanked the Xizang leadership for the warm welcome and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening the longstanding Pakistan-China strategic partnership.
He said both countries have maintained close cooperation across multiple sectors and can further expand collaboration in climate-related fields.

- Scientific research and innovation
- Mountain ecosystem conservation
- Biodiversity protection
- Sustainable development
Shared Mountain Ecosystems
Dr. Musadik Malik emphasized that Pakistan and Xizang share similar mountain environments and ecological challenges.
He said greater knowledge-sharing and institutional partnerships could help both sides develop effective solutions for climate adaptation and environmental protection.
In addition, the meeting highlighted opportunities for cooperation in traditional knowledge systems, including Tibetan medicine.
Officials noted that some traditional medicinal practices linked to the region are also familiar in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan area, creating potential opportunities for academic and research collaboration.
Strengthening Future Cooperation
Concluding the meeting, Dr. Musadik Malik reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to expanding cooperation with China in climate action and scientific research.
He expressed confidence that stronger collaboration in environmental protection and sustainable development would further deepen the friendship between Pakistan and China.
