Pakistan has initiated reforms in its agricultural research system with support from China to modernize research practices, strengthen food security, and improve export competitiveness. The initiative was discussed during a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain along with Syed Murtaza Hassan Andrabi, Chairman of the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council.
The discussions focused on restructuring Pakistan’s agricultural innovation framework with assistance from Chinese institutions, including the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Key reforms include the development of the Digital National Agricultural Research Information System (NARIS) and the establishment of Centers of Excellence for climate-resilient crops, livestock development, and precision agriculture.
The initiative also aims to accelerate the commercialization of agricultural innovations so farmers can access improved seed technologies, vaccines, and research solutions more quickly. A Scientific Advisory Committee with international experts, including Chinese specialists, will monitor progress and guide research priorities as part of broader cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor focused on agricultural modernization and industrial development.
