In a landmark step to strengthen academic and research collaboration, the University of Gwadar (UG), Pakistan, and the School of International Relations at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU), China, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing joint research and academic exchange in the field of Area Studies, with a particular focus on coastal belt development.
The MoU was formalized during a high-level seminar titled “CPEC Cooperation and China-Pakistan Relations” held at Sun Yat-sen University’s Zhuhai Campus. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to mutual academic advancement and outlines cooperation in research, faculty and student development, joint symposia, and cultural exchange. A key objective is to support the long-term growth and sustainability of coastal regions in both countries through collaborative research and policy engagement.
Representing the University of Gwadar, Prof. Dr. Manzoor Ahmed, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UG and Executive Director of the Pak-China Technical and Vocational Institute Gwadar, delivered a keynote address titled “Understanding Pakistan-China Relations Under CPEC and Beyond.” He emphasized Gwadar’s strategic position within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), and underscored the need for industrial development, improved connectivity, and a skilled workforce to unlock the region’s economic potential.
Prof. Manzoor further called for a structured roadmap to develop Balochistan’s mining and agribusiness sectors, urging increased technical cooperation with Chinese institutions. He highlighted the importance of vocational training tailored to emerging industries, and the critical role of academic partnerships in regional development.
The seminar gathered prominent scholars and institutional leaders from both countries, including participants from the University of Turbat and the University of Makran, who engaged in discussions on economic cooperation, educational exchange, and the evolving dynamics of CPEC.
This collaboration marks a significant milestone for the University of Gwadar, positioning it as a key player in international academic networks and coastal development studies. The partnership is set to facilitate student and faculty exchanges, launch joint research initiatives, and promote policy dialogue that aligns with the broader goals of regional integration and sustainable development under CPEC.
