Iran has expressed strong interest in expanding trade and economic cooperation with Pakistan by increasing the use of the ports of Karachi and Gwadar.

The commitment came during the 10th session of the Pakistan-Iran Joint Trade Committee in Islamabad. Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Atabak co-chaired the meeting with Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan.

Iran Prioritizes Economic Cooperation

Mohammad Atabak said Iran places the highest priority on strengthening comprehensive cooperation with Pakistan.

Moreover, he described Pakistan as a brotherly nation and emphasized the importance of expanding bilateral trade, investment, and economic ties.

He also said negotiations on the Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement (FTA) are progressing steadily. Furthermore, he expressed confidence that both sides will conclude the agreement successfully in the near future.

Focus on Border Markets

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan stressed the importance of operationalizing joint border markets to improve trade and create economic opportunities for border communities.

In addition, he said businesses in both countries have strong confidence in each other and are ready to expand commercial activities.

He added that both governments must provide a seamless, structured, and predictable environment to facilitate trade.

Karachi and Gwadar to Boost Connectivity

The discussions highlighted the strategic role of Karachi and Gwadar ports in strengthening regional trade and improving connectivity between Pakistan and Iran.

Officials believe greater use of these ports can increase trade volumes, reduce transportation costs, and support economic growth in the region.

Roadmap for Future Partnership

Jam Kamal Khan called for the finalization of practical road maps to deepen economic cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

Consequently, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding trade, accelerating FTA negotiations, and strengthening long-term economic partnership.
