In a significant development for tourism and trade, Pakistan has swiftly restored its key northern roadways, including the Karakoram Highway (KKH), following widespread disruption caused by heavy rainfall and landslides.
The National Highway Authority (NHA) led a large-scale emergency response to reopen the affected routes in Gilgit-Baltistan, Skardu, Naran, and Kaghan. The KKH — a strategic corridor under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — has now been fully reopened, reinstating vital connectivity between Pakistan and China’s Xinjiang region.
Despite extensive infrastructure damage, over 90% of the rehabilitation work was completed within days. Roads like N-15 through Naran and Kaghan were among the first to reopen, ensuring the movement of both passenger vehicles and freight resumed smoothly.
The NHA’s round-the-clock mobilization of manpower and heavy machinery played a key role in minimizing disruption. With all major arteries now operational, both transporters and tourists are experiencing much-needed relief at the peak of the summer travel season.
