The China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) has successfully completed the excavation of the fifth tunnel on the relocated section of the Karakoram Highway, often referred to as the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway.
Known as the Dogah Tunnel, this is one of seven tunnels being built under Phase 1 of the relocated KKH-01. This section of the highway is being shifted because 46 kilometers of the current route will be flooded due to the construction of the Dasu Dam in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Stretching 1,242 meters, the Dogah Tunnel marks a significant milestone in regional connectivity and infrastructure progress, according to a senior engineer involved in the project.
The tunnel excavation was completed on July 14, with sources confirming that work on the remaining two tunnels is expected to finish within two months.
The total length of the relocated highway will be 62 kilometers, as per information from the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA).
The new alignment of the KKH has been split into two segments, KKH-01 and KKH-02. Phase 1 (KKH-01) is designed to bypass the Dasu Dam construction area and prevent disruption to ongoing work.
