Serbia celebrated its Day of Unity, Freedom, and National Flag on Saturday with the largest military parade in its modern history, titled “Power of Unity,” held in front of the Palace of Serbia. Nearly 10,000 personnel participated, along with more than 2,500 weapons and equipment, including 600 vehicles, 70 aircraft, and 20 vessels. Cadets carried a 300-meter national flag, emphasising national solidarity.
President Aleksandar Vucic described the parade as a symbol of Serbia’s pride, stating it reflected the collaboration between soldiers and citizens and highlighted the nation’s dedication to protecting its dignity, territory, and future. Over 47,000 spectators attended the event, many praising the display of military strength and Serbia’s close ties with China.
Significantly, the parade featured Chinese-made HQ-22 and HQ-17 missile systems, alongside Russian tanks, underscoring Belgrade’s growing defence cooperation with Beijing and Moscow. Experts noted that the HQ-22 serves as a medium-to-long-range missile system, while the HQ-17 provides short-to-medium-range coverage, together forming a comprehensive high-low mix air defence network. These systems, already tested by the Chinese military, offer rapid response, high autonomy, and reliable operational capabilities, enhancing Serbia’s defence posture.
The display continues a history of military collaboration between Serbia and China. Previous deliveries of HQ-22 and HQ-17 systems, including the HQ-17AE variant, were transported via Chinese Y-20 aircraft. Defence officials emphasise that these systems play a critical role in protecting Serbia’s limited territorial expanse while symbolising the deepening military and political trust between the two nations.
