China has officially launched the world’s first China-Europe Arctic container express route, a major milestone in global shipping. On Monday, the container ship Istanbul Bridge completed loading at Ningbo Zhoushan Port’s Beiyi Container Terminal before departing for Felixstowe, the UK’s largest container port, via the Northern Sea Route.
Operated by a Chinese-invested shipping company, Sea Legend, the Arctic route slashes transit time by 22 days compared to traditional passages and reduces carbon emissions by nearly 50 per cent. The one-way journey from Ningbo Zhoushan to Felixstowe now takes just 18 days, with the maiden vessel expected to arrive on October 10.
This breakthrough follows Ningbo Zhoushan Port’s launch of its China-Europe express service to Wilhelmshaven, Germany, in late 2024, which had a 26-day shipping period. The new Arctic extension further strengthens China’s capacity to navigate trade disruptions while opening sustainable international logistics channels.
All slots on the inaugural voyage have been fully booked. Cargo includes high-demand e-commerce goods, battery products, and energy storage units, with direct berthing and fast pickup arranged to align with Europe’s Christmas shopping season.
Ningbo Zhoushan Port described the new route as a record-setting step for China-Europe trade, offering faster, greener, and more reliable shipping solutions.
