Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif chaired a review meeting in Islamabad today regarding the 100 MW solar power project for Gilgit-Baltistan. During the session, the Prime Minister announced that the federal government will fully fund the project to deliver clean electricity to the region’s residents. To ensure absolute transparency, he ordered an accelerated timeline and mandated an independent, third-party validation process for every stage of development. The 25 billion rupee initiative, launched in May 2026, aims to deliver clean, steady energy to Gilgit-Baltistan.
Expanding Solar projects
Officials briefed the meeting on the project’s layout, which is split into commercial and residential phases:
Government Buildings (18 MW): The solarization of public buildings in the Baltistan Division will be finished by October 2026. While the Gilgit and Diamer Divisions will be completed by December 2026.
Residential Homes (82 MW): Work is already underway to bring solar power directly to households across Gilgit, Skardu, Chilas, and Khaplu.
The 100MW Gilgit-Baltistan power project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council in August 2025. Later in December, the project was formally greenlit by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. A steady, budget-friendly, and sustainable electricity supply was guaranteed for the region by this official sign-off.
High Level Attendance
The strategy session was attended by key cabinet members, including Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Power Division Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, and Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Engineer Amir Muqam, alongside senior administrative officials.
