UNHRC Convenes Urgent Debate
The UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) held an emergency session in Geneva after Israel’s September 9 strike on Qatar, which killed five Hamas officials and a Qatari officer. UN rights chief Volker Turk called it “a shocking breach of international law” and urged accountability for unlawful killings.
OIC and Pakistan’s Stand
Representing the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Pakistan’s ambassador Bilal Ahmad said the “unjustifiable and unprovoked attack” was a dangerous escalation that violated the UN Charter and undermined Qatar’s mediation in Gaza. The OIC expressed full solidarity with Qatar and support for its right to defend sovereignty.
Qatar Denounces ‘Treacherous Attack’
Qatari Minister of International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad condemned the strike as an attempt to distort Qatar’s diplomatic role. She urged global action to hold Israel accountable and prevent impunity.
Global Response
The European Union stressed support for Qatar’s sovereignty and called on Israel to respect international law. China accused Israel of deliberately derailing peace efforts, while South Africa described the attack as proof Israel intends to prolong its “genocidal war” against Palestinians.
Israel’s Rebuttal
Israel and the US, both disengaged from the UNHRC, did not attend. From the sidelines, Israel’s envoy Daniel Meron dismissed the session as “a shameful platform for anti-Israel propaganda.”
