Pakistan’s Call at Doha Summit
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday urged Arab and Muslim nations to take concrete steps against Israel, including the suspension of its United Nations membership and the creation of an Arab-Islamic task force to counter Israeli expansionism.
Condemnation of Israeli Aggression
Addressing the extraordinary Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, convened after Israel’s strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar, Sharif condemned what he called a “flagrant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty” and warned that Israeli aggression threatened the entire region. He stressed that Pakistan, as a current non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, would actively support coordinated action at multilateral fora, including the OIC.
Joint Arab-Islamic Resolutions
The joint session of the Arab League and the OIC, attended by nearly 60 states, called on members to review diplomatic and economic relations with Israel and consider legal measures against its actions. Leaders also discussed coordinated efforts to push for Israel’s suspension from the UN.
Humanitarian Demands for Gaza
Sharif reaffirmed solidarity with Qatar, lauding its mediation role in regional peace efforts, and demanded an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, along with prisoner exchanges and unhindered humanitarian aid access. He termed Israeli expansionist pronouncements a direct assault on the prospects of a Palestinian state, reiterating Pakistan’s support for a two-state solution with Al-Quds as Palestine’s capital.
Bilateral Diplomacy on the Sidelines
On the sidelines, Sharif met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and pledged Pakistan’s full diplomatic backing at the UN and other forums. Senior Pakistani officials, including Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, accompanied him on the visit.
