Pakistan has launched a major maritime development plan, including a first-of-its-kind Green Ship Repair and Recycling Yard at Port Qasim and a Rs12 billion modernization of the Gaddani Ship Recycling Yard. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the initiatives during the closing ceremony of PIMEC 2025.
The Green Ship Yard is part of the “Sea to Steel Integrated Maritime Industrial Complex” and aims to support sustainable ship recycling while boosting Pakistan Steel Mills. The Gaddani yard upgrade will meet international environmental standards, enhancing efficiency and eco-compliance.
Chaudhry highlighted the expansion of Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) fleet, which currently has 12 ships, with plans to grow to 30 by 2026 and 60 within three years. The ministry has also licensed the first private company to run ferry services, promoting domestic maritime transport.
The National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy 2025–2035 targets doubling fisheries exports within a year. Additionally, the Pakistan Marine Academy will be upgraded to a Maritime University, training future seafarers. Chaudhry’s “Maritime Century (2047–2147)” vision includes deep-sea ports, AI-enabled shipbuilding, green digital ports, and regional maritime cooperation.
“Pakistan’s future lies in its maritime potential,” Chaudhry said, emphasizing the country’s strategic position connecting South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa. The government’s $100 billion maritime plan will position Pakistan as a regional blue economy hub by 2047.
