Pakistan and China have taken a major step forward in agricultural cooperation by signing more than two dozen memorandums of understanding (MoUs) worth $4 billion. These agreements, under the banner Pakistan, China Seal $4B Agri-Sector Agreements, cover mechanisation, seed development, smart farming, and precision agriculture. The deals were announced at the Pakistan-China Business-to-Business Conference in Beijing, held alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit. Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain witnessed the signing ceremony.
Focus on Food Security and Trade
Hussain underlined that these projects are vital for ensuring Pakistan’s food security and will also deepen bilateral cooperation with China. He pointed out that Pakistan can play a bigger role in China’s $215 billion annual agricultural import market. With its proximity and competitive pricing, Pakistan has an advantage over exporters from Brazil and other Western nations. The minister emphasised that fruits, vegetables, and cereal crops from Pakistan could capture a significant share of this demand.
Business Partnerships and Satellite Deal
The conference featured several B2B sessions with major Chinese and Pakistani companies. These included Dayu in the irrigation sector, Jessica EV and LOVOL in agricultural machinery, and Jinghua Seed Industry, along with Guard Agricultural Research. One of the most significant agreements came with the Chinese aerospace company PIESAT. The $406.4 million deal involves developing a satellite constellation for real-time communication and Earth data. In its first phase, Pakistan will launch 20 satellites, build a satellite manufacturing facility, and receive training to strengthen local space technology expertise.
Strengthening Long-Term Partnerships
Hussain praised the ongoing initiatives of Pakistani and Chinese agri-businesses, stating that under PM Shehbaz’s leadership, these partnerships are set to grow further. He reaffirmed Islamabad’s commitment to long-term agricultural collaboration with Beijing, stressing that the Pakistan-China Seal $4B Agri-Sector Agreements demonstrate a shared vision for innovation, food security, and sustainable growth.
