Pakistan has sentenced an Indian national, Usman, son of Abdul Rehman, to 20 years in prison on charges of espionage and terrorism. Security forces arrested him while attempting to cross into Pakistan through the Chaman border in Balochistan.
Usman also holds Afghan citizenship and had reportedly been under surveillance for several months before his capture.
Espionage and Terror Links
According to intelligence sources, Usman was involved in espionage and terrorist activities aimed at destabilising Balochistan. He was allegedly working for Indian intelligence agencies and intended to carry out covert operations on Pakistani soil.
Authorities labelled his actions a direct threat to national security, stressing the seriousness of espionage and terrorism, particularly when conducted by foreign nationals.
Special Court Conviction
Tried in a special court, Usman was found guilty of espionage and aiding terrorist activities. The 20-year sentence has been described as a strong message of Pakistan’s resolve to confront foreign interference and cross-border terrorism.
Officials also raised concerns over his dual citizenship, citing risks of cross-border terror networks operating between India and Afghanistan.
Diplomatic Fallout
The conviction comes amid already strained ties between Pakistan and India, particularly following India’s recent defeat in Marka-e-Haq. Pakistani officials have urged international bodies to take note of Indian cross-border interference and espionage activities.
So far, Indian authorities have not issued an official response.
