CPEC 2.0 Upgrade Focused on Agriculture and Industry
Wang highlighted that China will continue to support Pakistan in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity while also assisting in combating terrorism. He stressed that Pakistan remains a priority in China’s regional diplomacy.
“China appreciates Pakistan’s unremitting efforts and great sacrifices made in combating terrorism,” Wang said, according to a statement released by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two leaders discussed upgrading the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) under the “Version 2.0” framework, focusing on high-quality industrial, agricultural, and mining projects to boost Pakistan’s economic resilience and welfare.
China Prioritises Pakistan in Regional Diplomacy
The dialogue came ahead of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China, which will include leaders from Pakistan, India, China, Russia, and Iran. Wang welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to attend both the summit and commemorative events marking Japan’s surrender at the end of World War II.
Ensuring the Safety of Chinese Personnel in Pakistan
During the meeting, Wang reiterated the need for Pakistan to “effectively safeguard the safety of Chinese personnel, projects, and organisations” in the country. Over the years, China has invested billions of dollars into Pakistan under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), particularly in CPEC infrastructure projects, including Gwadar Port and the Karakoram Highway realignment.
“We are committed to deepening cooperation in industry, agriculture, and mining to enhance the welfare of the Pakistani people,” Wang stated.
Strategic Coordination Ahead of the SCO Summit
Both sides reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations, discussing CPEC 2.0, trade and economic ties, multilateral cooperation, and people-to-people connections. Senator Ishaq Dar emphasised that Pakistan and China share complete alignment on all key bilateral, regional, and global issues.
“China’s partnership with Pakistan is a cornerstone of our foreign policy and will continue to strengthen our economic and strategic resilience,” Dar said at the joint press briefing.
Bilateral Cooperation Celebrates 75 Years Next Year
Later, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met Wang Yi, reaffirming that Pakistan and China are “iron brothers, time-tested friends and all-weather strategic partners.”
The leaders agreed to continue close coordination at multilateral forums, including the United Nations Security Council, where Pakistan is currently serving as a non-permanent member. Both sides also plan to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China diplomatic relations next year.
