Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, chaired a high-level meeting in Islamabad with a 20-member Chinese delegation led by Yuan Jianmin, Advisor to the People’s Government of Xinjiang. The delegation, including Ma Xiaoli, head of Xinjiang Iron Brother International Company, is on a two-week visit to explore new avenues of agricultural collaboration.
China’s Role in Pakistan’s Food Security
Welcoming the delegation, Rana Tanveer Hussain described Pakistan’s agricultural partnership with China as a cornerstone for achieving national food security. He noted that agriculture remains the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, and China’s support in technology transfer, modern farming methods, and institutional collaboration will play a transformative role.
He stressed that China’s expertise in irrigation, biotechnology, and climate-resilient farming offers vital lessons for Pakistan as it battles climate change, water shortages, and rising population pressures.
Focus on Innovation and Skill Development
The minister highlighted Pakistan’s interest in Chinese cooperation in seed development, crop diversification, mechanisation, and water-efficient practices. He also called for exchange programs between Pakistani and Chinese universities, joint research initiatives, and training opportunities for young professionals to prepare the next generation of agricultural leaders.
“Our farmers are hardworking, but they need access to modern tools and techniques. With China’s cooperation, we can enable them to compete globally,” Hussain remarked.
Institutional Support and Investment Opportunities
The minister assured the Chinese delegation of Pakistan’s full institutional support for joint projects, ensuring transparency and facilitation for Chinese experts and companies. He expressed confidence that the delegation’s planned visits to Punjab’s agricultural lands and the proposed Gilgit-Baltistan Special Economic Zone would unlock new opportunities for bilateral investment.
He added that Pakistan is ready to work with China on developing climate-resilient crop varieties, smart irrigation systems, and agri-based industries to enhance rural livelihoods and boost national exports.
“Iron Brothers” Strengthening Ties
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Secretary of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, the Chairman of the National Seed Authority, and academic experts. Concluding the session, Rana Tanveer Hussain reiterated that Pakistan and China are “iron brothers,” adding:
