 Pakistan and China Enhance Academic Cooperation in Rapeseed Research

October 7, 2023 – In a significant move towards bolstering cooperation between China and Pakistan in the realm of rapeseed research and development, Li Dianrong, a renowned expert at the Hybrid Rapeseed Research Center in Shaanxi, China, expressed China’s commitment to assisting Pakistan in the growth of its rapeseed industry.

During a recent visit to the center by a Pakistani delegation led by Fateh Marri, the Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University, both sides explored avenues for collaboration, including germplasm resource exchange, cooperative breeding efforts, and reciprocal visits.

Li Dianrong, who has dedicated half a century to rapeseed breeding and cultivation technology research, is recognized as the “father of hybrid rape” and has independently cultivated 22 hybrid rape varieties. Speaking on behalf of the Hybrid Rapeseed Research Center, Li stated, “We are willing to assist Pakistan in the development of the rapeseed industry. We have discussed with the Pakistani delegation and reached a cooperation intention in rapeseed, which includes the exchange of germplasm resources, cooperative breeding, and regular exchange visits.”

He went on to elaborate on the center’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s rapeseed industry, mentioning plans for personnel training and services. Additionally, the center intends to test new rapeseed varieties in the Pak-China agricultural demonstration park, contributing to the growth of the sector in Pakistan.

During their visit, the Pakistani delegation had the opportunity to explore various research sites within the Hybrid Rapeseed Research Center, including the crop breeding sharing platform, molecular design breeding laboratory, and plant culture room. Impressed by the center’s accomplishments and advanced technologies in rapeseed breeding, Fateh Marri expressed his desire to collaborate with the center in further developing Pakistan’s rapeseed industry.

Vice Chancellor Fateh Marri also shared valuable insights into Sindh Agriculture University and Pakistan’s rapeseed sector. This exchange of knowledge and cooperation signifies a promising step toward the advancement of the rapeseed industry in both China and Pakistan.

As China and Pakistan deepen their collaboration in rapeseed research and development, it is anticipated that this partnership will bring substantial benefits to both countries, promote innovation, and contribute to the growth of the global rapeseed industry.
