Foreign ministers from China, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam have agreed on an upgraded cooperation framework to guide the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) into its next decade. The decision came at the 10th LMC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in Yunnan, China.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasised that the renewed framework will prioritise solidarity, openness, sustainable growth, technological innovation, and regional peace. He highlighted key areas including agriculture, water resources, environmental governance, and improved connectivity among member states.
The nations also committed to advancing cooperation in science and technology, with particular focus on the digital economy, artificial intelligence, and renewable energy, such as electric vehicles, photovoltaic power, and energy storage. Stronger customs coordination and inspection standards were proposed to secure regional supply chains.
Security collaboration remains a priority, with joint measures planned against telecom fraud, drug trafficking, and online gambling. Leaders further discussed creating a platform to protect overseas citizens.
On cultural and educational fronts, China pledged to expand scholarships, training programs, and exchanges for Mekong students, while also strengthening ties through media and think tank cooperation.
Participants praised the LMC’s achievements since its launch, reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and free trade, and agreed to prepare for the fifth LMC Leaders’ Meeting, which will set the roadmap for the “next golden decade.”
