The Pakistan Navy launched its third Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Mangro, on Friday at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group’s Shuangliu Base in Wuhan, China.
Senior naval and defence officials from both countries attended the ceremony. Vice Admiral Abdul Samad, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff (Projects-2), served as the chief guest.
Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral Samad highlighted the submarine’s strategic importance. He stressed that strong maritime security is vital in the changing geo-strategic environment. According to him, the Hangor-class fleet, with advanced sensors, modern weapon systems, and improved stealth technology, will strengthen Pakistan’s defence, sustain regional balance, and promote maritime stability.
The eight-submarine program remains a cornerstone of Pakistan-China defence cooperation. Under the agreement with China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC), four submarines are being built in China. The other four will be constructed at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW) under a Transfer of Technology (ToT) program.
Chinese naval experts praised the Hangor-class for its endurance, mobility, and firepower. They described it as a strong asset for underwater combat operations. The collaboration, they added, reflects the deep strategic trust and military partnership between the two allies.
This launch also marks another step in the Pakistan Navy’s modernisation drive. In recent years, the Navy has inducted advanced vessels and helicopters from China. Officials from both sides reaffirmed that this cooperation aims to improve maritime security and safeguard regional peace.
