China’s latest Z-20T assault helicopter is set to make its first flight performance at the 7th China Helicopter Exposition, scheduled in Tianjin from October 16 to 19. The helicopter, unveiled during Beijing’s grand V-Day military parade on September 3, will highlight its dual role in firepower and transport missions.
The upcoming expo will showcase 52 helicopters, drones, and eVTOLs for both military and civilian use. The PLA Army will feature static displays, flight performances, and indoor exhibitions, with the Z-20T’s flight marking a centrepiece of the event.
Derived from the baseline Z-20, the Z-20T comes equipped with small wings for missile payloads, an advanced targeting system at its nose, and precision-strike capability. During the September parade, seven Z-20Ts flew in formation alongside three Z-8L helicopters, symbolising their operational readiness.
Experts note that the Z-20 platform has strong potential for multiple missions, including assault, shipborne operations, and transport. The shipborne Z-20J variant, already revealed at Airshow China 2024, is considered a vital asset for marine operations, capable of carrying missiles, rockets, and guns while also performing search and rescue.
The Z-20 series, especially the new Z-20T, reflects China’s drive to advance indigenous helicopter technology and strengthen its aviation assault forces.
