China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, Sun Lei, defended the country’s military export policies during a UN Security Council session, emphasizing prudence, responsibility, and strict regulation of dual-use items, including drones.
The briefing addressed Yemen sanctions, where the US claimed that certain dual-use components allegedly used by Houthi forces originated from China. Sun reiterated that China enforces strict controls over military exports and dual-use technology, ensuring compliance with international norms.
Sun highlighted that Chinese companies engage in normal trade and economic cooperation under WTO rules and market principles. He cautioned against unfair targeting of Chinese businesses and criticized US military actions in Yemen for violating international law and causing civilian suffering.
Representatives of several nations stressed that sanctions on Yemen should not disrupt humanitarian aid or harm civilians, underlining the need to balance security measures with humanitarian responsibilities.
Sun concluded by reaffirming China’s commitment to responsible arms exports, transparency, and international compliance while supporting humanitarian operations and regional stability.
