At a WTO council meeting in Geneva, China criticised U.S. reciprocal tariffs, accusing Washington of pursuing unilateral and protectionist trade policies. Beijing’s stance on the China WTO reciprocal tariffs dispute urged the U.S. to abide by multilateral rules and work toward the stability of global services trade. According to China Media Group (CMG), the Chinese position paper exposed the damaging ripple effects of U.S. trade restrictions on the international services sector.
China emphasised that services trade is a key driver of global economic growth, providing developing countries with greater access to global value chains. The paper accused the U.S. of double standards, highlighting losses in goods trade while ignoring substantial surpluses in services, thereby eroding business confidence and disrupting supply chains.
The Chinese delegation called on WTO members to remain alert to protectionism and strengthen cooperation for an open, inclusive, and rules-based trading system. Countries such as India, Brazil, Egypt, and Pakistan supported China’s WTO position, emphasising that a stable multilateral framework is vital for global growth.
Beijing reaffirmed its commitment to deepen collaboration with member states, further liberalise services trade, and promote sustainable international economic development.
