China has urged Mexico to reconsider its reported plan to raise import tariffs on over 1,400 items from countries without free trade agreements, including China. Beijing’s Ministry of Commerce emphasised that such measures could damage bilateral trade ties, undermine investor confidence, and send negative signals to global markets.
A ministry spokesperson said China hopes Mexico will act with caution, noting that both countries are important economic partners. Beijing warned that unilateral steps, even if WTO-compliant, risk being seen as concessions to external pressure and could disrupt multilateral trade cooperation.
China further stressed that protectionist moves not only harm trading partners but also weaken the certainty of Mexico’s business environment. The spokesperson reiterated that disputes should be resolved through dialogue and consultation, rather than unilateral action, and warned that Beijing would take necessary steps to safeguard its interests if required.
