In a major breakthrough, 10 megawatts of electricity were successfully supplied on July 12 to Gwadar Port and the Gwadar South Free Zone, which spans 60 acres, through a connection from the national grid.
This development followed efforts by the Quetta Electric Supply Company (QUESCO), which began the project on May 8 by installing the required infrastructure, including power cables and poles. According to QUESCO officials, two separate feeders of 5 megawatts each are now supplying electricity to Gwadar Port and the South Free Zone without any disruption.
The power supply marks a turning point for Gwadar’s economic development, acting as a strong driver of industrialization in the port and its associated free zones. Last year, QUESCO had already delivered 10 megawatts to the Gwadar North Free Zone, offering much-needed relief to investors facing power shortages.
Electricity is now available at industrial rates ranging between Rs. 35 and Rs. 45 depending on normal or peak hours, with guaranteed uninterrupted supply. Previously, Gwadar Port relied on an 8.5 MW diesel-powered generator, which proved to be a costly and inefficient option.
