Xi Jinping has called for accelerating the development of a new energy system to strengthen China’s energy security. His remarks come as global markets face uncertainty due to tensions involving Iran and the United States.
He emphasized the need for better planning and faster construction of modern energy infrastructure. In addition, he highlighted the importance of hydropower development and ecological protection. He also urged the safe and orderly expansion of nuclear energy.
Balanced Energy Strategy
Xi stressed that China must maintain a balanced energy mix. While renewable energy continues to grow, coal still plays a key supporting role in ensuring stability.
Analysts note that China remains relatively resilient to global oil shocks. Coal accounts for more than half of its energy consumption, while oil imports through the Strait of Hormuz represent only a small share.
At the same time, China has invested heavily in renewable energy. Early development of wind and solar power has strengthened its long-term energy strategy.
Focus on Clean and Sustainable Growth
Despite relying on coal, China continues to pursue cleaner energy solutions. Xi reaffirmed the country’s commitment to low-carbon development and environmental sustainability.
Moreover, China is expanding major energy projects. It has begun constructing one of the world’s largest hydropower dams on the Tibetan Plateau. In addition, work has started on a high-altitude solar thermal power plant in Tibet.
Energy Security Amid Global Uncertainty
Global tensions have increased volatility in energy markets. However, China’s diversified energy system helps reduce risks.
Xi emphasized that a greener and more resilient energy system will support long-term economic growth. He added that innovation and diversification remain key to future energy security.
