The Sindh government has announced plans to establish electric bus manufacturing plants in collaboration with China, following President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent visit to Beijing.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the discussions held during the president’s 10-day trip focused on strengthening cooperation in transport, energy, agriculture, and waste management. He described the visit as “highly successful,” highlighting that upcoming projects would enhance facilities and generate employment opportunities in the province.
Meetings with Chinese officials emphasised setting up production units in Sindh for both electric and conventional buses. According to Memon, this initiative will not only modernise public transport but also create thousands of jobs for local youth.
The development comes after the federal government introduced its New Electric Vehicle Policy (NEVP) 2025–2030, which targets 30 per cent of new vehicle sales to be electric by 2030. The policy aims to reduce fuel imports, cut emissions, and promote sustainable mobility across Pakistan.
During the visit, Pakistan and China also pledged deeper cooperation in agriculture, environment, mass transit, and people-to-people exchanges. Memon noted that Chinese investors showed particular interest in the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone, where new industries are expected to take shape.
He added that President Zardari stressed the importance of building industries and training Pakistani manpower in China so that they could bring back skills to support the country’s economic growth.
