Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for water resources to remain outside political disputes. He stressed that water is vital for regional survival and future generations.
Addressing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Bishkek, the prime minister highlighted the importance of regional cooperation.
He also marked the SCO’s 25th anniversary. Furthermore, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as an active and responsible member.
Pakistan Calls for Regional Peace
Shehbaz said rising geopolitical tensions continue to challenge the international community. However, he described the SCO as an important platform for addressing shared challenges.
Pakistan, he added, supports peaceful conflict resolution and respect for international law. He also highlighted the importance of secure energy corridors amid recent regional tensions.
Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding
The prime minister said Pakistan played an active diplomatic role during the recent regional crisis. He linked those efforts to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.
According to Shehbaz, the memorandum can help reduce tensions. He also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to sustainable regional peace.
Water Must Remain Outside Political Disputes
Shehbaz emphasized that South Asia cannot achieve its full potential without lasting peace. He described water as essential to the survival of the region and its people.
He warned against using water as a political tool or source of pressure. Moreover, he stressed that international agreements must receive full implementation.
Pakistan Raises Gaza Humanitarian Crisis
The prime minister also addressed the situation in Palestine. He highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank.
He urged the international community to support the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination.
Pakistan Highlights Terrorism Threat
Shehbaz described terrorism as one of the region’s most serious security challenges. He said Pakistan has lost more than 90,000 lives in the fight against terrorism.
The country has also suffered economic losses exceeding $150 billion. Consequently, Pakistan continues to call for stronger regional cooperation against terrorism.
Afghanistan and Regional Stability
The prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s desire for a peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan. He stressed that Afghan territory must not become a base for terrorist groups targeting Pakistan.
Overall, Shehbaz’s address focused on water security, regional peace, counterterrorism, and stronger cooperation among SCO members.
