President Asif Ali Zardari has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives and destruction caused by floods and landslides in Sri Lanka following days of heavy rainfall. In his condolence message, the president conveyed sympathies to the bereaved families and all those affected by the disaster.
He noted with concern that dozens of people have died and many remain missing, emphasizing Pakistan’s solidarity with Sri Lanka during ongoing rescue and relief efforts across multiple districts.
Highlighting the broader impact of climate change, President Zardari observed that countries of the Global South, like Pakistan and Sri Lanka, face extreme weather events that threaten lives, livelihoods, and public resources despite their limited contribution to global emissions.
He called for collective efforts to not only support affected countries in times of crisis but also to develop shared strategies focused on resilience, preparedness, and mitigation. The president extended his condolences to Sri Lanka’s President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and expressed support for the government and people of Sri Lanka in responding to the humanitarian impact of the disaster.
He concluded by praying for the departed souls, strength for the grieving families, and the safe recovery of those still missing.
