Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has granted in-principle approval for the formulation of a comprehensive National Energy Plan, aiming to bring long-term reforms to Pakistan’s energy sector. He directed federal ministries and provincial governments to work closely to develop an integrated and viable strategy focused on affordability, efficiency, and sustainability.
Chairing a review meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office, the premier also approved the establishment of a dedicated secretariat to support the formulation and implementation of the plan. Key areas discussed included power transmission reforms, electricity pricing, auction of wheeling charges, and the fast-track privatisation of power distribution companies (DISCOs).
The prime minister stressed that the plan must ensure low-cost electricity for industries to boost productivity, while improving facilitation for domestic consumers. He noted that recent reforms have already improved power transmission services and directed relevant ministries to incorporate climate, financial, industrial, and petroleum sector inputs into the final policy.
