Pakistan, joined by Algeria and Somalia, has formally requested an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after Israeli airstrikes struck Doha, the capital of Qatar.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said the request came in response to Israel’s “unprovoked and illegal aggression” against a sovereign state. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s “complete solidarity and firm support with the government and brotherly people of Qatar.”
Unprecedented Strike on Qatari Soil
The Israeli military targeted a residential complex in Doha’s Leqtaifiya district where senior Hamas leaders were present to discuss a Gaza ceasefire. While top leadership survived, at least six people were killed, including an aide, the son of a Hamas negotiator, three bodyguards, and a Qatari security officer. It marked Israel’s first known military operation on Qatari territory.
Qatar and Global Reaction
Qatar denounced the strike as a violation of its sovereignty, calling it a “cowardly act” and a blatant breach of international law. The Gulf state also announced the suspension of its mediation role in ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Germany, Russia, the UK, and other international actors warned that the escalation undermines regional stability and peace efforts.
Pakistan’s Position
Pakistan’s Foreign Office termed Israel’s actions “highly provocative and reckless,” stressing that such impunity threatens international peace and security. It urged the global community to hold Israel accountable for what it described as a clear violation of the UN Charter and established norms of interstate relations.
“Pakistan will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with Qatar in defence of its sovereignty and security,” the statement added.
The UNSC emergency session is expected to be held later this week.
