The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) and Kashgar University have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand academic cooperation between Pakistan and China.

The agreement will support student and faculty exchanges, joint research, and wider institutional collaboration. It also aims to strengthen academic dialogue between the two universities.

Agreement Signed During Kashgar Fair

Dr. Tariq Jadoon, Provost of LUMS, and Prof. Palidan Tursun, President of Kashgar University, signed the agreement on August 14.

The signing took place during the 15th Xinjiang Kashgar–Central and South Asia Commodity Fair. The partnership marks another step in China-Pakistan educational cooperation.

Moreover, the MoU could create new opportunities for joint research projects and academic exchanges.

Universities to Build Stronger People-to-People Links

Hui Qi, Adjunct Faculty at LUMS, witnessed the signing ceremony. He described the agreement as an important milestone in educational and people-to-people exchanges.

He emphasized that connectivity extends beyond roads, railways, and trade corridors. Universities can also connect communities by bringing students, researchers, and institutions together.

Kashgar’s Strategic Academic Position

Kashgar has historically served as an important Silk Road hub. Today, the city remains a major gateway between China, Central Asia, and South Asia.

Its proximity to Pakistan also gives Kashgar University strong potential for academic collaboration. As a result, the university could become an important educational bridge between Pakistan and China.

Major Regional Trade Fair Held in Kashgar

The MoU signing took place during the five-day Kashgar–Central and South Asia Commodity Fair.

More than 1,100 Chinese companies and 181 enterprises from 40 countries and regions attended the event. Participants included businesses from Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Ghana.

The fair focused on international trade and investment. It also promoted business matchmaking in sectors such as biomedicine, cultural tourism, textiles, and agriculture.

Pakistan-China Educational Cooperation Expands

Pakistani companies also participated in the fair. Their presence reflected growing commercial engagement between Pakistan, China, and the wider Central and South Asian region.

Meanwhile, the LUMS-Kashgar University partnership adds an academic dimension to these growing regional links. Through exchanges and joint research, both universities can further strengthen educational and people-to-people cooperation.
