Pakistan has firmly rejected the allegations made by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling them “baseless and unfounded.” Zelenskyy alleged that Pakistani nationals were fighting as mercenaries in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. These remarks were made during his visit to Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, where he claimed that foreign fighters from countries including China, Pakistan, and African nations had been spotted on the battlefield.
No Evidence Shared, Says Pakistan Foreign Office
Responding promptly, Pakistan’s Foreign Office issued a strong statement dismissing the claims and demanded clarification. The official statement read:
“The Government of Pakistan categorically rejects the baseless and unfounded allegations of the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the conflict in Ukraine.”
The FO clarified that no official communication or evidence has been provided by Ukraine to back Zelenskyy’s claims. It also said that Islamabad will seek a formal explanation from Ukrainian authorities.
Pakistan Reiterates Its Neutral Stance on the Ukraine War
In its statement, Pakistan reiterated its neutral and diplomatic stance on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, emphasising:
“We remain committed to a peaceful resolution through dialogue in accordance with the UN Charter.”
This statement is in line with Pakistan’s long-standing position of avoiding entanglement in foreign conflicts.
History of Similar Accusations Dismissed
This is not the first time Pakistan has faced such accusations. In 2023, a report by The Intercept claimed that Pakistan had supplied weapons to Ukraine in exchange for securing an IMF bailout. Pakistan strongly rejected that report, asserting its policy of neutrality and non-involvement in the war.
Other Nations Also Named in Zelenskyy’s Remarks
Zelenskyy’s claims weren’t limited to Pakistan. He also mentioned China, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, though China has already denied similar allegations in the past. Reports also suggest North Korea has sent troops to aid Russia, specifically in the Kursk region.
Pakistan Advocates Peace at the UN
Earlier this week at the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan again called for a comprehensive ceasefire and de-escalation in Ukraine. The country welcomed any diplomatic initiatives, including prisoner exchanges, and expressed concern over the rising civilian casualties in the conflict.
Walking a Diplomatic Tightrope
While maintaining neutrality, Pakistan has been deepening economic ties with Russia, especially in the areas of energy and trade. As the conflict continues, Islamabad finds itself balancing diplomacy and strategic interests, refraining from openly criticising Russia while advocating for peace.
