Pakistan on Tuesday officially took over the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the month of July, marking its eighth time serving on the 15-member body and its first presidency since 2013. Pakistan began its current tenure as a non-permanent member in January 2025, which will continue through 2026.
While the UNSC presidency rotates monthly and carries no executive powers, it gives the presiding nation the ability to shape discussions and influence the agenda, especially crucial during moments of global gridlock on pressing issues like the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar stated that Pakistan assumes the presidency with “humility and firm commitment” to the UN Charter. In a social media post, he acknowledged the worsening conflicts and humanitarian crises worldwide, pledging that Pakistan would take on its role with responsibility and purpose.
During its presidency, Pakistan will host two major high-level sessions, including the quarterly open debate on Palestine. This session is expected to receive significant global attention in light of the deepening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, noted that the world is experiencing heightened instability and complex geopolitical challenges. He stressed that Pakistan will approach its presidency with a focus on principle, balance, and constructive dialogue.
Ambassador Ahmed highlighted transparency, inclusivity, and effectiveness as key values of Pakistan’s approach. He emphasized the country’s longstanding advocacy for peaceful dispute resolution and its belief in dialogue and diplomacy.
He further stated that Pakistan is committed to strengthening the multilateral system and promoting cooperation among UN member states, aiming to support collective, timely actions that align with the UN Charter and global aspirations.
