Pakistan strongly denounced Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian mission of more than 40 civilian vessels carrying nearly 500 activists and aid workers from 44 countries. Among them were prominent figures such as Greta Thunberg and former Pakistani senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan.
Global Sumud Flotilla Intercepted by Israeli Forces
The flotilla set sail from Spain to deliver urgent humanitarian supplies to Gaza. However, Israeli forces intercepted it before it reached its destination. Reports confirmed that Israeli forces seized at least 13 vessels and detained many activists, including Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan. Advocacy groups stated that only one observer boat managed to escape and relay news of the interception.
Pakistan’s Strong Condemnation and Calls for Release
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned what he called a “dastardly attack” and demanded the immediate release of the detained activists. He stressed that their only “crime” was carrying food and medical aid for the besieged people of Gaza. “This barbarity must end. Peace must be given a chance, and humanitarian aid must reach those in need,” he declared.
Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar described the act as a “flagrant violation of international law.” He reiterated Pakistan’s demand for an immediate ceasefire, the lifting of the blockade, and unhindered aid delivery to Gaza.
Foreign Office Slams Violation of Humanitarian Law
The Foreign Office accused Israel of deliberately obstructing humanitarian relief. It urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for repeated violations. According to the FO, detaining international activists was a grave breach of humanitarian principles and international law.
Leaders and Civil Society Voice Outrage
Political leaders across Pakistan also reacted strongly. Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani called the act “state terrorism and barbaric savagery.” Information Minister Attaullah Tarar prayed for the safe return of all detainees. Meanwhile, JI chief Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman announced nationwide protests in solidarity with Gaza, praising the courage of activists aboard the flotilla. Civil society leaders also hailed their determination to deliver aid despite threats.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Palestine
Finally, Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause. It renewed its call for a sovereign, independent state based on pre-1967 borders with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the capital. The government emphasised that obstructing aid during a looming humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza is indefensible and must be addressed urgently by the global community.
