PM Terms Raid a “Dastardly Attack”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has strongly condemned Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, describing the move as a “dastardly attack” on an international humanitarian mission.
Flotilla Aimed to Deliver Aid to Gaza
The 40-vessel flotilla, carrying more than 450 activists, parliamentarians, and aid workers from 44 countries, was attempting to deliver food and medicine to Gaza. Israeli forces stopped 13 boats and detained several passengers, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, while 30 vessels continue sailing toward the besieged enclave.
Pakistan’s Response
“Shehbaz said the only crime of those on board was carrying aid for the hapless Palestinian people. This barbarity must end,” he wrote on X, calling for the immediate release of those apprehended and unhindered humanitarian access to Gaza.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also condemned the raid, terming it a “flagrant violation of international law” and urging a ceasefire, lifting of the blockade, and the swift release of detainees.
International Backlash
The flotilla sparked international outrage. Turkey labelled Israel’s actions an “act of terror,” while Colombian President Gustavo Petro expelled Israel’s diplomatic delegation and terminated a free trade agreement after two Colombians were detained. Malaysia reported that eight of its citizens were among those arrested, and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim denounced Israel for showing “utter contempt” for global conscience.
Global Protests and Solidarity
Meanwhile, protests erupted in Italy and Colombia, with Italian unions calling a nationwide strike in solidarity with the flotilla. Organisers accused Israel of intercepting their boats illegally in international waters, scrambling communications, and using aggressive tactics such as water cannons. Despite the interception, they vowed to continue their mission, declaring that 30 boats remain on course toward Gaza.
Israel’s Position
Israel maintains the flotilla is a provocation, insisting that aid should be delivered through designated channels under its blockade, imposed since 2007.
Echoes of the 2010 Raid
The confrontation has revived memories of the deadly 2010 flotilla raid, further intensifying global criticism of Israel’s blockade amid its ongoing Gaza offensive, which has already claimed tens of thousands of lives.
