Rashid Akram and his family in Lahore have transformed their electricity use with 36 rooftop solar panels from Chinese company Astronergy. The 21-kilowatt system produces roughly 28.5 megawatt-hours annually, lowering energy bills and reducing carbon emissions by about 27 tonnes per year.
Solar energy is also helping Pakistan’s farmers. In Okara, a 30-kilowatt solar-powered irrigation system now generates 41 megawatt-hours yearly, replacing unreliable grid-dependent pumps. This provides stable electricity, cuts costs, and ensures timely crop irrigation, benefiting agricultural planning.
Pakistan’s solar sector is growing rapidly. Chinese-made panel imports increased nearly fivefold between 2022 and 2024, reflecting rising demand for sustainable energy. Experts note that rooftop and field solar installations are easing pressure on the national grid while promoting cleaner, more efficient power use.
