At a recent UN Security Council meeting on cooperation between the United Nations and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), China’s representative sharply criticised the United States for what he described as baseless accusations regarding the situation in Xinjiang.
Fu Cong, China’s permanent envoy to the UN, firmly rejected U.S. claims, asserting that Xinjiang is currently experiencing unprecedented social stability and economic growth. He accused the United States of using the Xinjiang issue to meddle in China’s internal affairs and hinder its progress under the guise of human rights concerns.
Fu pointed out that over the last six years, more than 100 nations, including several Islamic countries, have publicly backed China’s stance at the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee. These countries, he noted, oppose the politicisation of human rights and foreign interference based on selective narratives.
Highlighting perceived hypocrisy, Fu questioned U.S. silence on the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the historical plight of Palestinians, suggesting that Washington’s selective outrage undermines its credibility. He further cited America’s ongoing domestic challenges, such as gun violence and systemic racism, as evidence of its own human rights failures.
In a pointed conclusion, Fu urged the United States to address its internal issues and adopt a more constructive role in promoting global peace and cooperation, rather than fueling divisions through double standards and bloc politics.
