Beijing Condemns “Fallacy of Taiwan Independence”
China has strongly condemned Taiwan’s regional leader, Lai Ching-te, for promoting separatist ideas and spreading what Beijing calls the “fallacy of Taiwan independence.” On Wednesday, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council’s Taiwan Affairs Office, accused Lai of distorting facts and fabricating the “mainland threat.” He said Lai is misleading both the Taiwanese public and the international community with his false claims.
Provocative Remarks in a US Interview
Chen’s statement followed Lai’s interview with the US radio program The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show. During the interview, Lai repeated his “new two-state theory” of “mutual non-subordination,” criticised mainland military exercises, and urged higher defence spending. He also called for stronger cooperation with the so-called “democratic camp.”
China Warns Against External Interference
The spokesperson warned that Lai’s push for “independence through military means” and reliance on “external forces” are raising tensions across the Taiwan Strait. These actions, Chen said, undermine peace and push the island toward crisis. He called Lai a “destroyer of cross-Straits peace” and a “creator of crisis.”
Beijing Accuses Lai of Undermining Taiwan’s Future
Since taking office, Lai has consistently fueled anti-China sentiment and pandered to foreign interests, according to Beijing. Chen said Lai’s behaviour has damaged Taiwan’s economy, wasted public resources, and jeopardised the island’s future growth. He reaffirmed that Taiwan is an inseparable part of China and stressed that the mainland has the “firm will, strong determination, and powerful capability” to defeat any separatist attempt.
Unification “Unstoppable,” Beijing Says
“The trend of national unification is unstoppable,” Chen stated firmly. He warned that depending on foreign powers for “independence” will only bring humiliation and failure. “Taiwan independence forces are destined to perish,” he added.
Experts Say Lai Is Playing Washington’s Pawn
Experts in Beijing echoed the government’s warning. Li Haidong, professor at China Foreign Affairs University, said Lai’s closeness to Washington makes him a pawn in US strategic games. According to Li, Taiwan risks being treated as a bargaining chip in future negotiations between the US and China.
China Reaffirms One-China Principle
Finally, Beijing reiterated that the one-China principle remains a global consensus. The government vowed to take every necessary measure to defend its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity.
