China Showcases Nuclear Triad at V-Day Parade

At Beijing’s V-Day military parade, China showcases its Nuclear Triad at V-Day Parade in a single historic display. For the first time, land, sea, and air-based strategic forces appeared together, marking a turning point in China’s defence posture. The lineup featured the JL-1 air-launched missile, JL-3 submarine-launched intercontinental missile, and the DF-61 and DF-31BJ land-based intercontinental missiles. Analysts described the event as a milestone in nuclear deterrence.

Air-Launched Missile Boosts Flexibility

For the first time, China officially introduced its air-based nuclear strike capability. This addition strengthens flexibility and resilience, providing another credible option for second-strike responses. Unlike fixed systems, strategic bombers carrying long-range missiles can take off quickly, move unpredictably, and reduce the risk of interception. Consequently, China gains greater deterrence power.

JL-3 Extends Submarine Nuclear Reach

The newly unveiled JL-3 intercontinental submarine-launched missile was highlighted as a breakthrough in sea-based deterrence. With a range of about 10,000 kilometres, the missile allows submarines to strike global targets without leaving coastal waters. This improvement increases survivability, reduces exposure to hostile detection, and ensures stronger protection for China’s nuclear fleet.

Dual Deployment Strengthens Survivability

China can now combine nearshore operations with long-distance deployments. This dual approach increases unpredictability, improves readiness, and raises the suddenness of counterattacks. Moreover, it ensures that China’s submarines remain protected from potential blockades, further strengthening its second-strike capacity.

Strategic Importance of the Nuclear Triad

By showcasing integrated land, sea, and air-based systems, China has joined the small group of nations with a complete nuclear triad. Military experts argue that this synergy not only boosts nuclear counterstrike reliability but also improves the ability to bypass global missile defence networks. Ultimately, China showcases the Nuclear Triad at the V-Day Parade as a safeguard of sovereignty, national security, and development interests.
