China and Pakistan have launched five new joint research sub-centres across major engineering universities to strengthen infrastructure resilience against natural disasters. The initiative, part of the China-Pakistan Belt and Road Joint Laboratory on Smart Disaster Prevention of Major Infrastructures, highlights growing scientific cooperation under the Belt and Road framework.

Enhancing Resilience Through Science and Innovation

The new sub-centres at NUST Islamabad, UET Lahore, NED University Karachi, BUITEMS Quetta, and UET Peshawar will drive research in earthquake engineering, flood control, and climate-resilient infrastructure. They aim to foster joint research, innovation, and talent exchange in disaster prevention technologies.

A seven-member Chinese delegation led by Professor Chen Zhongfan from Southeast University, who also serves as Executive Deputy Director of the Joint Lab, formalised the operational launch during a high-level visit that concluded on October 9, 2025.

Supporting CPEC and Sustainable Development

During the visit, the delegation met with Vice Minister of Science and Technology Shahid Iqbal Baloch and NDMA Chairman Inam Haider Malik. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening disaster management and protecting strategic projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Unveiling ceremonies at NUST and UET Peshawar coincided with the 3rd International Conference on Climate Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Management, where experts showcased smart monitoring systems and advanced disaster prevention technologies.

A Milestone in Belt and Road Innovation

The joint laboratory, approved by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology, serves as a flagship project under the Belt and Road Innovation Cooperation framework. Its expansion into Pakistan’s top universities deepens bilateral collaboration in applied research, promoting resilience, sustainability, and regional innovation.

Both governments emphasised that the partnership will convert scientific research into practical solutions, helping Pakistan better respond to natural disasters and climate risks while advancing sustainable development goals.
