Liu Guozhong, Chinese Vice Premier, discussed the importance of advancing basic research and boosting innovation capabilities within the pharmaceutical field.
The Vice Premier, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, evaluated the ongoing efforts in medical research, the progression of major laboratories, and the construction of a scientific framework while visiting the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Peking University. Liu also attended a symposium where he engaged with spokespersons from different sectors to get a gist of their perspectives on current complexities and developments in research.
Liu Guozhong highlighted the need for “collaborative research and policy implementation centering on people’s health” and called for the rapid growth of innovative drugs and state-of-the-art medical equipment. These efforts, he stated, are essential for boosting the Healthy China initiative, a national measure to improve public health outcomes.
Recognising the growing momentum in China’s pharmaceutical innovation landscape, Liu called for a collective approach involving enterprises, universities, research bodies, and medical institutions. The Vice Premier underscored the implementation of emerging technologies, including AI and big data, to construct robust life sciences and health databases that can accelerate potential research.
Additionally, Liu urged deeper international cooperation in pharmaceutical technology, citing the significance of high-level openness and global engagement in advancing China’s capability to protect the health and well-being of its citizens.
