China has lodged a formal complaint against Canada at the World Trade Organisation (WTO), challenging Ottawa’s import restrictions on steel and related products. According to the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), Canada has enforced steel tariff rate quotas and levied discriminatory duties on goods containing “Chinese steel components.”
A MOFCOM spokesperson criticised these actions as clear examples of unilateral and protectionist trade measures that violate WTO rules, harm China’s lawful trade interests, and disrupt global steel and related supply chains.
Beijing expressed strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition, urging Canada to immediately withdraw the measures, respect the multilateral trade framework, and work towards fostering stable economic and trade relations between the two nations.
