Official Delivery Marks Historic Aviation Milestone
In a landmark achievement for China’s aviation industry, the Xiangyun AS700, the country’s first domestically developed manned airship, has been officially delivered in Shaoxing, East China. The airship, nicknamed the “aerial beluga” due to its smooth, cloudlike design, arrived at Jianshui Science and Technology City. Its arrival drew significant attention from local officials and aviation enthusiasts.
Fully Independent Design and Compliance
Developed independently by the Special Vehicle Research Institute under the Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the AS700 represents a major step toward commercial airship operations. It is fully compliant with airworthiness regulations and has complete independent intellectual property rights. Measuring 50 meters in length and capable of traveling up to 700 kilometers, the airship can carry up to 10 people. This makes it suitable for sightseeing, research missions, and low-altitude transport operations.
Unique Low-Altitude Experience
Thanks to its “low-altitude, slow-flight, safe, and reliable” design, the AS700 can cruise between 100 and 300 meters. This allows passengers to enjoy panoramic views of scenic regions like Jiangnan’s waterways. Such an experience offers a perspective that traditional ground travel cannot match, creating new opportunities for tourism and leisure aviation in China.
Training and Certification Ahead
In the coming months, the airship will undergo further flight tests to complete its certification process for commercial operations. At the same time, the institute is training the first three AS700 operators. Once ready, these pilots will support safe operations and help expand airship deployment across multiple regions.
Industrial Collaboration and Low-Altitude Economy
The delivery also signals the start of closer cooperation between the Special Vehicle Research Institute and Yuecheng district authorities. Their collaboration aims to establish a complete industrial chain for manned airships. This initiative will foster a broader low-altitude economy, integrating technology, tourism, and local development.
Driving Innovation in China’s Aviation Industry
Officials and experts believe the AS700 will accelerate China’s low-altitude aviation sector and inspire further technological innovation. The project highlights the country’s commitment to homegrown aviation solutions and strengthens China’s presence in commercial airship markets. The Xiangyun AS700 is not just a technological achievement—it is a step toward redefining aerial transport and tourism.
