Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed China’s commitment to strengthening ties with Brazil, emphasising cooperation to set an example of unity and self-reliance among major Global South nations. Speaking during a phone call with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Xi highlighted the historic strength of China-Brazil relations and the positive momentum in building a community with a shared future.
Xi reaffirmed China’s support for Brazil’s national sovereignty and legitimate interests, urging all countries to unite against unilateralism and protectionism. He praised Brazil for successfully hosting the recent BRICS Summit and emphasised the importance of the BRICS platform in fostering consensus among developing nations.
Both leaders agreed on the need to address global challenges collaboratively, including ensuring the success of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Belem, Brazil, and promoting peace efforts, particularly through the “Friends of Peace” group to facilitate resolution of the Ukraine crisis.
Brazilian President Lula underscored Brazil’s commitment to deepening strategic cooperation with China and praised China’s role in upholding multilateralism and free trade rules. He also highlighted Brazil’s firm stance on protecting its sovereignty and expressed readiness to enhance coordination with China in multilateral forums to oppose unilateral practices and safeguard shared interests.
This dialogue marks a continued effort by both countries to solidify their partnership and contribute actively to a more just global order and sustainable development within the Global South.
