Chief Minister (CM) Bugti highlighted the critical challenges facing Gwadar’s water supply, emphasising that persistent electricity outages are the main barrier to effective water distribution in the port city. Speaking via video link from Quetta during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal, the CM called for urgent, coordinated action to resolve these issues.
Bugti clarified that Gwadar possesses sufficient water reserves capable of sustaining the population for up to seven months. However, ongoing power failures have severely hampered the ability to pump water from reservoirs to urban storage tanks, disrupting the continuous supply to residents. He assured that the provincial government has been diligent in making regular and advanced payments to the Gwadar Port Authority for water sourced from the desalination plant, dismissing any notion that the crisis stems from water scarcity.
The Chief Minister warned that without timely rainfall, Gwadar’s water situation could deteriorate further after seven months. He stressed the necessity of long-term, sustainable infrastructure improvements for both water and electricity systems to avert future emergencies and alleviate the hardships faced by Gwadar’s residents.
The meeting also included Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Owais Ahmad Leghari and senior federal and provincial officials, underscoring the high-level attention being given to this pressing issue.
