Technology-driven collaboration is becoming an increasingly important aspect of bilateral relations as China and Africa get closer to their 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2026.
Development in AI
With an emphasis on enhancing livelihoods and bolstering local capacity, Chinese technology and development experience are being deployed throughout several African nations, by emphasising on enhancing livelihoods and bolstering local capacity. The areas of cooperation range from smart agriculture to digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI) training.
AI training and digital connection are becoming key focal points of China-Africa collaboration. A Chinese business has started a rural communications project in Madagascar that would help roughly 165,000 rural households by constructing 73 base stations over an area of 2,340 square kilometres. It is anticipated that the initiative will increase remote residents’ access to e-commerce, mobile payments, and communications services.
Cloud computing, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence (AI) courses are available at the Luban Workshop in Kenya, which was co-founded by Chinese and local partners. In order to prepare for careers in the digital economy, students can earn certifications in data communications and artificial intelligence.
Advancement in Africa’s Agriculture
African tourists showed a keen interest in perennial rice technology during the China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo 2025 in Changsha, Hunan Province, central China. Perennial rice may continue to produce after just one planting, which helps save labour and farming expenses compared to regular rice, which needs to be replanted annually.
Burundi, Uganda, Madagascar, and Mozambique have already implemented the technique. In 2024, a Chinese technical team set up a demonstration base in Burundi, where first-season yields reportedly increased in comparison to certain native types.
The development of livestock and the prevention of desertification are two further areas of agricultural cooperation. Under a livestock technology project that began in 2017, Chinese specialists introduced lucerne cultivars suitable for sandy conditions and juncao, which literally translates to “fungi and grass” in Mauritania.
Infrastructure cooperation
Infrastructure cooperation has placed a greater emphasis on long-term development and skill transfer. About 1,800 local jobs have been created in Lesotho by a Chinese-built water transfer tunnel under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, and hundreds of workers have gotten vocational training in electrical engineering and construction. China-Africa cooperation has helped close infrastructure gaps, train technical professionals, and promote industrialisation, according to Tanzanian journalist George Mtui.
Way forward
China and Africa have steadily expanded cooperation in all areas of development. Thus, Africa has successfully reduced gaps in infrastructure, agriculture and AI.
