Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited Chinese companies to relocate industries to Pakistan, describing the initiative as a “win-win model” for both countries during a B2B investment conference in Hangzhou.
The conference focused on IT, telecom, battery energy storage systems, and agriculture, bringing together key business leaders and government officials.
Shift Toward Joint Ventures and Manufacturing
The Prime Minister noted that rising labour costs in China present an opportunity for industrial relocation. Therefore, he encouraged Chinese firms to establish joint ventures with Pakistani companies and manufacture goods locally for export markets.
In addition, he highlighted opportunities in textiles, leather, and other labour-intensive industries where Pakistan can offer cost-effective production bases.
Agriculture and Food Trade Expansion
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Pakistan’s agrarian economy and stressed the importance of modernizing agriculture. He noted that Pakistan aims to improve per-acre yield, introduce high-quality seeds, and expand mechanized farming.
Moreover, he pointed out that China imports nearly $100 billion worth of agricultural products, suggesting greater space for Pakistan to increase its export share through cooperation.
Special Economic Zones and Investment Facilitation
The Prime Minister also invited investors to Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones, including a major 6,000-acre zone in Karachi.
He assured Chinese investors of long-term leases, modern infrastructure, and one-window facilitation. Furthermore, he said Pakistan is prioritizing investment over aid to build a self-reliant economy.
Focus on IT, AI, and Youth Development
The address highlighted the potential of IT and artificial intelligence, especially given Pakistan’s young population. Training programs and certification initiatives were also mentioned as tools to improve employment opportunities.
Additionally, the Prime Minister noted ongoing cooperation in digital transformation, agriculture training, and industrial modernization.
Strengthening Long-Term Economic Partnership
He reaffirmed that Pakistan-China relations are rooted in the historic Silk Road legacy and continue to deepen under the leadership of Xi Jinping.
Finally, he expressed confidence that ongoing MoUs and business agreements will translate into concrete investments, strengthening economic ties and boosting regional development.
