A top-level red alert for flash floods was jointly issued by China’s Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration on Sunday due to heavy rain in the country’s central and eastern provinces.
Red Alert
Authorities issued a warning that there is an abnormally high chance of unexpected mountain floods in portions of western Anhui and eastern Hubei provinces. This will continue from 8 pm on Sunday to 8 pm on Monday. A top-level red alert for flash floods was jointly issued by China’s Ministry of Water Resources and the China Meteorological Administration on Sunday.
Parts of Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, and Hubei were also under an orange alert, the second-highest category. Local governments have been mandated to conduct preventive evacuations for impacted individuals as well as real-time surveillance.
Areas affected
Heavy torrential rains are predicted for southern Henan, western and southern Anhui, northwestern Hunan, northeastern Jiangxi, and northeastern Chongqing from Sunday night to Monday night. Extreme, record-breaking rainstorms are expected in certain parts of eastern Hubei and southwest Anhui.
A yellow notice for geological disasters was jointly issued by the China Meteorological Administration and the Ministry of Natural Resources for ten provinces, including Shanxi, Anhui, and Hubei.
There is also a high probability of mudslides and terrain collapse for Southern Anhui and Eastern Hubei, as the landslip risk was increased to orange alert.
Every level of government has been directed to initiate emergency contingency procedures right away. Additionally, officials have strongly encouraged the public to stay away from high-risk tourist destinations and to keep an eye on rolling updates.
