Reform of Global Governance

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi advocated for the improvement and reform of global governance at the Group of Friends of Global Governance at the United Nations (UN)

Wang stated in his keynote address that enhancing and reforming world governance is a historic job for this generation and that it requires unwavering dedication and strong convictions. In order to increase the effectiveness of the international organization and the authority and competence of the Security Council, he urged measures to advance UN reform.

He pointed out that UN reform should be initiated by member states and implemented in an equitable, inclusive, and transparent manner. Wang emphasised the significance of strengthening the voice of small and medium-sized nations and developing nations, especially by addressing the historical injustice that Africa has experienced.

Expanding governance in the fields of AI, Outer space and Cyber Space

Additionally, he urged measures to deepen economic and financial system reform, create worldwide agreement on speeding growth, drive global human rights governance in the right direction, and modify UN peacekeeping operations to meet contemporary demands.

The minister emphasized improving rules in the field of AI, Outer Space and Cyber Space. He praised the Group of Friends of Global Governance as a stabilizing force for justice, calling for its expansion. Meanwhile, China remains committed to multilateralism and sharing its governance expertise.

The group reached consensus on 5 main points:

  1. Members back democratizing international relations, ensuring all nations participate and benefit equally in global governance.
  2. They urge upholding the UN Charter and international law while opposing double standards and coercion.
  3. Members support a central UN role and multilateralism, rejecting unilateralism and power politics.
  4. They advocate reforming global governance and closing the North-South divide to share development benefits.
  5. They call for concrete actions to solve pressing global challenges and meet the people’s needs.

Foreign ministers and representatives from more than 60 countries, including Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Cuba and Zimbabwe, attended the meeting. UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed briefed the participants.
